As a Senior-Level Executive, Smith offers a history of proven leadership and community engagement. With a keen sense of organizational management and refined relationship-building skills, he has extensive experience working collaboratively with multiple sectors of the community.

Smith's work experience is broad and emphasizes over nineteen years of senior management. As a non-profit community leader, he has managed multi-million dollar operations; reported to and served on volunteer boards and management committees; and, has a clear grasp of the complexities and chaotic nature of non-profit funding and culture. Madison Ballet, Inc. Madison, WI     1999-2018

Artistic Director, former Executive Director, for a not-for-profit performing arts corporation committed to promoting the art of dance and cultural arts to youth and the greater community through education and performance.

 

Accomplishments include:

  • Growing programming and infrastructure of Madison Ballet from $250K to $1.2M operating budget supervising approximately 40 employees.

  • Developing, opening, and managing the School of Madison Ballet that currently enrolls over 450 students.

  • Developing and managing all programming, education, and community outreach.

  • Forming alliance with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County exposing youth to the performing arts.

  • Supervising faculty recruiting, retention, evaluation, and all areas of faculty concern within the School of Madison Ballet.

  • Developing and managing personnel planning, budgets, and accounting practices to ensure fiscal accountability.

  • Establishing, negotiating, and maintaining budgetary and personnel needs.

  • Serving as the spokesperson in the community with the media for Madison Ballet.

Served as a Faculty Member in the School of Education in the Department of Dance. Taught Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Science level courses.

 

Family Health Systems Madison, WI     1997-2000

Served as a Financial and Business Analyst for this for-profit corporation providing administrative function of health care plans such as, Group Health Cooperative, Family Health Plan Cooperative, and Community Health Plan.

 

Accomplishments include:

  • Leading the Y2K project for converting all financial systems for ten affiliated companies. Systems included: general ledger, accounts payable, premium billing, accounts receivable, and claims processing.

  • Designing and developing a data warehouse strategy for financial reporting including board management and regulatory reporting.

  • Leading the Financial Closing Process Improvement project as part of the Strategic Operating Plan.

 

The Neutral Zone New York, NY     1995-1997

Served as a Youth Counselor for this not-for-profit youth center. The Neutral Zone is a referral and drop-in center serving predominantly African-American and Hispanic youth on Christopher Street in the Village, lower Manhattan.

 

Selected accomplishments include:

  • Counseled and mentored youth one-to-one and in a group.

  • Participated in the development of programs involving peer outreach, block beautification, and counseling services.

  • Coordinated educational activities for youth, including trips to Washington, D.C., camping trips, and excursions around New York City.

  • Facilitated organizational planning meetings to increase counseling services and activities, and administrative operations.

 

National League for Nursing, Inc. New York, NY     1994-1997

Served as Director of Special Projects to the Chief Business Officer and Vice President of Finance and Administration for this $20 million, not-for-profit corporation with 103 full-time employees. Served as Acting Controller and Interim Director of Customer Service and Fulfillment.

 

Selected accomplishments include:

  • Successfully directed conversion project migrating financial MIS from mainframe and manual to consolidated state-of-the-art windows-based LAN.

  • Refocused a re-engineering project in 1994, which led to net bottom-line swing of $1.6 million over the year. Generated first-time development of $1 million cash reserves and first positive fund balance in two years.

  • Generated net operating surplus of over $1 million, a fund balance of over $1 million, and a cash reserve of $1.4 million during 1995 operating period.

  • Developed with Chief Business Officer a $5 million strategic business alliance between NLN and a leading international information technologies company. This commercial joint venture developed interactive, multi-media, multi-disciplinary distance learning services for nurse educators via the Internet.

  • Instrumental in developing an outsourcing implementation project generating projected savings of $3.5 million in administrative overhead.

  • Presented at the New York City Partnership and Commerce on The Contingent Workforce: Strategic Staffing Scenarios. Panel of speakers included Citicorp and AT&T.
